• Preaxial
• Postaxial

Preaxial polydactyly refers to cats with extra toes on the inner side of their paws, resembling thumbs. Postaxial polydactyly results in extra toes on the outer side of the paw, giving the impression of larger, more rounded feet.

These extraordinary feline adaptations can vary from having just one or two extra toes to an astonishing eight or more!

Famous Polydactyl Cats

Polydactyl cats have a rich history and have become the stuff of legends. The renowned writer Ernest Hemingway was famously fond of polydactyl cats and collected many during his lifetime.

Today, his former residence in Key West, Florida, is home to around 50 descendants of his original feline companions, many of whom still possess the polydactyl trait. These unique cats are known as “Hemingway cats” and are cherished by visitors from around the world.
